"As far as I know, this is the first time that a freshman has served as president. This is a historical event," said Assistant Dean of Student Life Ete Anderson. "I think Zach will do a great job. He takes everything that he does seriously. I am sure he will put that same effort into being president for Jan Term."
Miskel, as Speaker of the Senate, is next in line to fill in for absent executive officers, even if he is only a freshman. "When I started hearing rumors that I would take John's position for Jan Term, I was kind of stressed out and I called John a lot over break to talk to him about what I would have to do....Now I am having a great time with it," said Miskel.
Miskel was elected to be Speaker of the Senate at a retreat near the beginning of the school year. This job includes being the first person to speak on each resolution at meetings. He is also the president of the Institution of Affairs, where he plans what will be on the agenda for each meeting.
Since two executive officers will be gone for January, John Zabala assigned the only current, four-year member of the senate, Jahmese Myres, to fill in for Laci Jackson. Myres has served as the Vice President of her class for two years and is currently the President of the Senior Class.
Anderson said, "Zach and Jahmese are the voice of the Associated Students right now and act as the liaison to administration." They have to be ready to handle anything that may come up involving the school, students, and administration during the month of January.
Miskel and Myres will have to fulfill more office hours and lead a January 11 Committee of the Whole Senate Meeting to meet the demands of their temporary positions. "We will work with the rest of the Executive Team to make sure that everything is running smoothly at Saint Mary's," said Myres. They will also have to be available to class senators in case they have any questions or need assistance.
Jahmese Myres also works for Rec Sports as the Basketball Coordinator, is an RA on second floor Augustine, and is part of the Pulses Dance group. Zach Miskel is a club representative for Gael Vision, KSMC radio, and the Campaign to End the Death Penalty. He also serves as a member of the Lasallian Collegian and the Code of Conduct Board.
