Aude Lambert, the current #1 singles player for the Gaels, will look to move her squad to the top of the WCC this season.

The Saint Mary's women's tennis team had their first match of the season last Saturday against the 17th ranked California Golden Bears.

They played at the Hellman Tennis Stadium and put up a good fight. Despite the Gaels being unable to pull out any match victories on the board, they played tough.

Last years' first team West Coast Conference doubles pair, Jessica Hoath '08 and Aude Lambert '09, started off slow going down 5-1 early. They battled back to bring it to 6-5, but eventually fell 8-5. The #3 doubles pair, Caitlin Aloia and Feline Charlot, were real competition until the Bears pulled out the final two games to bring a final score of 8-6.

Unfortunately Saint Mary's would not come any closer to scoring a victory against the Bears falling 7-0.

However, there were many bright spots for the Gaels, including Erin Young, '09, playing in her first collegiate match at the #2 spot.

Although she lost the first set quickly 6-0, she came back and lost a tough 6-4 set in the second.

Other notable matches came between #3 Jessica Hoath and California's Bojana Bobusic. The first set was a close 7-5 while the second set was left a 6-2, a score unreflective of the match. Stefanie Ordoveza, '08, was the last to leave the court, losing in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. She was down in the second set 4-0 after a controversial call by the umpire but eventually pulled out the next 3 games, thereafter.
