Saint Mary's students who traveled to New Orleans this Jan Term will be members of the audience on The Ellen DeGeneres Show today.
The show will have a Mardi Gras theme, and every member of the audience will be someone who has done relief work in New Orleans. It airs at 4:00 p.m. today on NBC.
Of the 25 students who took the class, 21 will be in the audience, as well as Associate Dean of Liberal Arts Shawny Anderson and videographer Marsha Ong, who both taught the class.
"We wrote to Ellen's website and Oprah's website saying we thought they would be interested in our photo journal on the web," said Anderson. Communication professor Margaret Dick and Associated Students of Saint Mary's College President John Zabala '06 also contacted the shows.
Ellen's show, as it turns out, did look at the photo journal and the video and last Monday invited the class to be part of the audience. However, they are not sure when or if they will be on camera or if they will get a mention.
Anderson rented a 15-passenger van and the class traveled down to Los Angeles on Sunday afternoon. Several of the students were already in L.A. with family or for other conferences. They were in the studio yesterday afternoon and caravanned back to Saint Mary's last night.
Featured on the show will be actor Dennis Quaid, New Orleans band Cowboy Mouth, and Becky Zaheri, founder of "Katrina Krewe."
