Three new employees have joined Saint Mary's staff in the Academic Advising, Financial Aid, and Development departments. Ivan Pagan, Coordinator of Latino Student Academic Advising and Achievement, and Assistant Director of Financial Aid, Jill Homann, have been here since the second semester started February 6. Claudine Puente, Administrative Assistant to the Director of the Annual Fund, is in her third week of work in the Development Office.

As the Coordinator of Latino Student Academic Advising and Achievement, Pagan has two main responsibilities. The first of which is to provide academic advising to Latino students and undecided students. Also, he provides support for cultural programming for the Latino Community.

Pagan was attracted to Saint Mary's College because of its Lasaillian mission. "It is very important to use education as a means of empowering disenfranchised communities," said Pagan.

Working in the Academic Advising department allows Pagan to put this Lasallian mission into action. "I am trying to create more opportunities for students to build skills for success," said Pagan. Some of these skills include learning how to manage your time, stay focused, and manage stress.

Another way that Pagan strives to improve the Latino community is by bringing community leaders on campus to meet with small groups of students. These small group discussions can allow the students to "learn what led to their [the speaker's] success in life," said Pagan

Communication and a strong sense of community are also important aspects in helping struggling students. "A greater sense of community makes the college experience much more satisfying," said Pagan. "By improving communication, you increase the chance of success for students. You provide them with greater comfort, greater confidence, and foster a greater sense of fulfillment."

Jill Homann was also interested in working at Saint Mary's because of the Lasallian traditions. Other aspects that she likes are the friendly atmosphere and small size. She recently moved to California from Fort Collins, Colorado where she worked in the Financial Aid department at Colorado State University (CSU) for five years.
