Nature's substitute for our mother's teat. That's why many of us suck, sucked, or will suck our thumbs, according to Dr. Keanu Reeves in Mike Mills film, Thumbsucker. Mills' film premiered at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival boasting a number of big names like Vince Vaughn and Neo. Usually, these names signify the presence of a mainstream movie disguised as an Indie movie. This time, despite the big names, there is nothing mainstream here. An outcast teenager sucks his thumb, experiments with sex and drugs, becomes a debate champion then quits, and lies on his applications to college. Good stuff here. A low-key film with a delicate portrait of a kid trying to find his way.
