Elections for all the class officers begin today. The races for many of these positions are hotly contested as there are a total of 26 people running for nine positions.
The most contested race is within the current freshman class. There are four candidates for president and seven for vice president. "There's a lot of interest from the class of 2009, which is good because they are the future of Saint Mary's College," said Associated Students of SMC Vice President of Administration Laci Jackson '06. "Orientation had a lot to do with it."
E-mails were sent out to all presidential and vice presidential candidates, but not all responded, thus their comments and positions could not be included in this article.
Zack Miskel is currently a freshman class senator and was acting ASSMC President while John Zabala was abroad for Jan Term. "I believe I can bring down student apathy in terms of on-campus events," said Miskel. "This may be due to poor publicity tactics, so I am going to try to tweak on-campus advertising with a centralized bulletin board or something of that nature. I also would like to create a system in which students' voices are heard and voiced more frequently." Miskel, who will be an Orientation Leader this summer, said, "As speaker I was quickly introduced to what some would call 'people of high stature' like Mike Zoll, Scott Kier, Jim Sciuto and others. Also, as speaker I learned how to do my research on docketed items seeing as I was first to speak on each subject at senate meetings."
Sophomore vice presidential candidate Isabel Moncada has been involved in student government since she was in middle school and wants to continue doing so. "I can offer my leadership skills and all of the experiences that I have gained throughout the past years to help our class with fundraising and whatever else we plan to take on," said Moncada.
According to the ASSMC bylaws, a candidate must obtain a simple majority to win their position. If it is not reached, a run-off of the top two candidates will take place. It is likely that this rule will be in effect for the sophomore class elections.
