Last Thursday, the forum "Becoming an Inclusive Community: Facing the Challenges of Racism, Heterosexism, Classism and Ableism at Saint Mary's College" was held in the Delphine Intercultural Center. The discussion was hosted in response to a handful of racial attacks throughout the campus during the past couple weeks. The fact that these occurrences even took place on our campus is truly unsettling. I'm sure we'd all like to think of Saint Mary's as inclusive, or in the least, tolerant and respectful to all people. When things like this happen, it's difficult not to be deeply disappointed. Like most of the campus, we all hope that these kind of incidents never happen again, but we also recognize that may sadly not be the case. The forum was a great idea to spark honest discussion throughout the community, although there is still much to be done to prevent these kind of conflicts. Unfortunately, it seems as though the issue is still at large, and until more people can make the effort to contribute their thoughts and efforts to the cause, we can't help but have the feeling of preaching to the choir.
