"It's a big honor to be recognized for the work I have done through the years," said Esquivel, "I'm so excited I can not put it into words. It's great to see all the student employees through various departments being recognized this week for all of their hard work and the hours they put in."
As the winner of this year's honor, Esquivel received a plaque on which his name was engraved. It will hang in Filippi Hall as well as his picture next to it. Esquivel also received a gift card to Barnes & Noble.
Esquivel's supervisor, Visit and Ambassador Program Coordinator Paula Martinucci, said, "We are all impressed by Joe's demeanor. One of the most responsible student workers I have had in the 17 years I have been at SMC."
Martinucci said that Esquivel was very instrumental in transitioning the tours program into the current Student Ambassador Program. "We are always looking for high-caliber students to join the Ambassador Program," said Martinucci. "Joe was always available in a crunch and definitely leads by example-really steadfast."
She also said that Esquivel's work has always been "professional and consistent; well respected by all staff members and students."
As part of his duties, Esquivel helps train freshmen for the tour show room position. Showroom hosts allow tours to view their rooms and the hosts tell the tour about typical Saint Mary's freshmen dorms. Esquivel also provides guidance for current ambassadors.
Stephanie Roybal '05, Esquivel's co-worker through the Ambassador Program said, "Joe is always easy to talk to, his demeanor of being a supervisor and a peer is highly respected." She also said that Esquivel is "very knowledgeable, very helpful; he's always a person that you can rely on. He's very hard working and responsible when working on projects in the office."
