Whitewater Rafting

Issue date: 5/9/06 Section: Detour
Churning water, flipped rafts, and swimming through rapids was just part of an ordinary day while whitewater rafting with RecSports. Offered this past weekend for only $50 (an unheard of inexpensive cost for a day trip), a lucky number of brave Gaels threaded their way through about 21 miles of uncontrollable water chaos. The scenery on the (mostly) pristine and isolated South Fork of the American River added a romanticized touch that mostly went ignored by us adventure-seekers. While some rafters seemed intent on flipping their boat or falling out multiple times, overall the experience was a soaking, adrenalizing enterprise.
