From cheering for the Gaels on the side of the court to serving those who are less fortunate, Alana Weinroth '09 shows her strengths as a dynamic member of the Saint Mary's community. She has been nominated for this week's Lasallian Student Spotlight for exemplifying one of the Lasallian Core Principles: concern for the poor and social justice.

Weinroth advocates for those suffering from injustice and strives to treat everyone equally. She believes that everyone deserves a chance to live a decent life and that our job is to help others by bringing them up to a sufficient standard of living. Alana designed her own social justice major at Saint Mary's and hopes to one day open an international adoption agency in the Bay Area.

One of the goals of Weinroth is to help people who are less fortunate. As a part of Campus Ministry, she is an active participant with the Dorothy Day House. Here she helps to prepare and serve meals to the men who live in the shelter. "All the men are very thankful for their meals and it is just an amazing feeling to know that you are greatly helping these by just giving them a single meal," she said. Through her trips to the Dorothy Day House, Weinroth has also been able to share meals with these men and learn about the difficult struggles in their lives.

Not only does Weinroth participate in helping others outside of the Saint Mary's Community, but she is also an active member in the school community as well. Weinroth is involved in a variety of clubs and activities on campus. She said, "I love being apart of the SMC Community because it is very easy to become involved."

Weinroth is a member of the Saint Mary's Spirit Team as well as PAX Christi, where she volunteers her time to work with children. She is also a member of the sophomore Senate. "As a senator, I like being able to make a big difference in a small environment and I am given many opportunities to help make changes," she said.

Besides the many activities that Weinroth is involved in at Saint Mary's, she also is working three jobs. She said, "My favorite of the three jobs is working at the Lafayette Preschool because I love to work with kids."

Overall, Weinroth looks up to those people that make a significant change in the world. She really admires those who have made a difference in the lives of many people, such as Gandhi and Martin Luther King. Her motto is, "It just takes one person to make a difference, so why not me?"
