Softball won 4-3 at the SMC Invite this weekend, improving their season record to 9-12 for the year.

The Gaels surpassed their win total from last year while going 4-3 over the weekend with wins over UC Davis, Idaho State, and Stony Brook.

In their first game of the weekend against Davis, Saint Mary's trailed 4-1 going into the fifth inning and the Gaels put on a four-run rally to pull ahead 5-4 on a single by Molly Bergeson '08.

Saint Mary's added another run in the sixth to seal the win.

In game two of the double-header on Wednesday, the Gaels only managed three hits as the Aggies posted a 3-0 shutout at Cottrell Field.

Senior Chelsea Loftis pitched six innings while giving up three unearned runs.

Saint Mary's had five errors in the game. Sophomore Lauren Clark recorded three of the five errors, resulting in two unearned runs.

Senior Kate Albaugh and junior Megan Galloway combined to lead the Gaels past Idaho State 5-1 on Thursday. With two outs in the third inning, Galloway hit a two-run home run to put the Gaels ahead 3-1.

That was all Albaugh needed as she pitched a complete game allowing only one run on six hits, while striking out nine.

Freshman Katherine Delpit capped off the win with a two-run home run of her own in the sixth inning. Junior Bronwyn Russell chipped in by going 2-3 with an RBI in the third.

The scoring happened early against Stony Brook on Saturday and it was all Saint Mary's would need.

The Gaels posted two runs in the first inning on a single and a wild pitch. Loftis took care of the rest as she pitched a complete game allowing one run on five hits for the 2-1 victory.

The Gaels lost the second half of their second double-header of the week to Utah Valley State 9-2.

The game was close until the sixth inning when the Wolverines scored three runs and then four more in the seventh.

The loss to Utah Valley State gave Saint Mary's the second seed in the tournament going into knock-out stage. The Gaels started off slow against the third-seeded Stony Brook, falling behind 6-0 after one and a half innings.

The Gaels chipped away scoring two in the bottom of the second. After giving up two more in the fourth, the Gaels scored four to pull within two.

The Gaels found a break and tied the game in the sixth with two unearned runs.

Saint Mary's went into the bottom of the seventh tied at eight. Junior Sandra Ruezga doubled to left center with one out, which was followed by a single by Clark to score Ruezga for the win.

This set up the rematch between Saint Mary's and Utah Valley State for the title. The Wolverines took a 4-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning and the Gaels loaded the bases with one out but could only push one run across as Utah Valley State won 4-2.

With the second place finish in the Saint Mary's Invitational this weekend, the Gaels are 9-12 and will play six games this week against Eastern Illinois, Georgia Southern, Purdue, Northern Colorado, and New Mexico State.
