Saint Patrick's Day, in my mind, was ruined by a drunk driver who massacred three cars in the Sabatte parking lot. All the parties seemed to die and the attitude was no longer a party mood.

Either that, or everyone partied the night before and were still too hung over to drink on the, what has become a, drinking holiday. Because of this, I am petitioning for a Pirate Appreciation Day.

This day is for all those swashbucklers and scalawags who did not get an opportunity to live it up on Saint Patty's Day and because pirates deserve a day of their own too, don't they?

The day will be in honor of Jack Sparrow, Blackbeard, Captain Morgan, and Jack Daniels (even though he isn't a pirate). Halloween is an excuse for pirate-esque but there needs to be a day where all you hear is "Yo ho, yo ho, a pirates life for me."

There would have to be activities like sword fighting, walking the plank, and possibly finding the buried treasure. No putting an "X" on the ground; that would be too easy. Make people dig for the treasure. Maybe use metal detectors or a basset hound. They're good at finding things.

The treasure could be anything. It could be iPods, magazines, tater tots, or even the random left sock that you lost last week. Believe me, you would be shocked to find it. It can be one enormous party of finding the treasure and possibly starting a mutiny. Who the mutiny is against is up to you. Do not let me stop you.

I know there was "Talk like a Pirate Day" promoted on Facebook, but that isn't enough. You just can't talk like a pirate, you must act like one. I'm not condoning stealing, plundering, or rape but I am supporting a jolly good time.

I would say it should be the day of Gaelstock, but that day is already taken for two reasons. 1. People will already be wasted on Gaelstock day and 2. It's Cinco de Mayo so people will be twice as drunk. So there needs to be a day for it.

I think we have to go with May. First weekend is Gaelstock, second weekend is Mother's Day, the third is finals weekend, so let's go with the fourth weekend.

May 25 should be Pirate Appreciation Day. It is the last day of finals, graduation is the next day, and Pirates of the Caribbean 3 opens that day as well. With that in mind, get out your pirate shot glasses (the really big one) and bust out the rum, because Pirate Appreciation Day is coming.
