Every Saint Mary's student will attest to the reality of the fiasco that occurred last September on the night of the annual Oasis dance. Anticipating seniors especially were shocked and let down upon receiving word that the event was cancelled, due to a local blackout scarcely an hour prior to commencement.

As one of the three premier Saint Mary's events-along with MidKnight Madness and GaelStock-Oasis is not an occasion that many students are willing to let slip away without a fight. Clarence Funtanilla '07 said, "MidKnight Madness sucked and I know they can't top Blackalicious for this year's Gaelstock. [It would] be nice if they at least gave us the dance."

This is why the Associated Students of Saint Mary's College (ASSMC), in accordance with Program Board Productions (PBP) and Student Involvement and Leadership (SIL), decided to come together to discuss potential solutions with the frustrated senior class officers.

After months of futile conferencing, the senior class representatives have cooperated and come up with a workable resolution. Fortunately for the disappointed seniors out there, a new time and date has been agreed upon for this year's Oasis.

As always, however, there is a catch. Due to the high financial setbacks that will be caused by the schedule, PBP has been forced to tap into its funds for Gaelstock, the annual concert put on for the Saint Mary's community in late spring.

"As class officers, we felt it was our duty to do all we could to [benefit] our class, and I know my fellow seniors will agree that a slight change in plan for Gaelstock is a small price to pay for experiencing Oasis one last time," said Mark Gilson '07, senior class president.

Not everyone agrees with this rationalization. Frank Bratcher '08 said, "Why should the rest of us have to suffer just because [the seniors] missed out on one dance?"

It was recently announced by PBP that it was able to secure its biggest Gaelstock act ever, a reuniting Rage Against the Machine (RATM). Unfortunately for some students, this year's Oasis will make it impossible to host the band, due to the lack of sufficient funds.

"I don't know what everyone's so worked up about," said Saint Mary's alumnus Stephanie Roybal '05. "Oasis is easily the best thing to look forward to if you want [to be] an SMC student. Who's Rage Against the Machine anyway?"
