Last Wednesday, the Asian American Donor Program came to Saint Mary's for bone marrow donor registrations. There were 59 participants total. The last time the program came onto campus was five years ago, and that was run by the Health and Wellness Center.
This time, however, the diversity clubs on campus contacted the Asian American Donor Program. Tim Huey '10 was the one who more or less organized the event. He helped out at a bone marrow drive at his church and got the idea from there.
It is especially important for the registry to have people from all ethnicities. Currently, there are about 4.7 million registered Caucasians in the registry and only about 420,000 registered Asians. The chances for finding a Caucasian match in the registry are 85 percent and only 30 percent for minorities in general.
Chances of being called back for a preliminary check up are one in 250. Even then, you are not guaranteed to be a match because further tests are required.
The registry is looking for donors between the ages of 18 and 60. If you're interested in joining the registry, you can contact the Asian American Donor Program at 1-800-50-Donor or go online to www.aadp.org.
Integral Program's annual Waltz celebrates 50th year
Feel like getting dressed up? Like masks? Then perhaps you should consider going to the Integral Waltz. This is the 50th year of the Waltz, a dance that the Integral Program hosts every year. This year's theme is "Midnight Masquerade." The Waltz is open to the entire Saint Mary's community. A costume isn't necessary for the dance, but semiformal attire is required. Gentlemen, button-up collared shirt, jacket, preferably a tie, and no jeans. Ladies, a skirt rather than pants with your ensemble.
It will take place in the Soda Center on Friday, April 20, from 8 p.m. to midnight. Tickets go on sale on April 10, the day after Easter break. Tickets are $20 for presale and $25 at the door. There are no discount prices for couples. Some resident advisors are paying for part of their residents' tickets. Check with your RA to see if you can get a discounted price.
