May 5, 2007 marks Saint Mary's College's most highly anticipated event: Gaelstock. Last year, as Pepper lit up Saint Mary's College by attracting nearly 1,100 in the audience, students enjoyed a fun-filled day. This year, Rebelution will kick off the venue for Phantom Planet.

"Gaelstock makes our small college feel like the bigger colleges in California for a day. Gaelstock is such a huge event at Saint Mary's College because it brings our community together, and it is undoubtedly the biggest event on our campus all year," said Michael Leonard '08.

Gaelstock this year will feature a free outdoor barbeque, an inflatable boxing ring, and inflatable slides, and possibly a station to enjoy a cold snow cone as you listen to the easy reggae beats of Rebelution. "This year at Gaelstock, there will be a Beer Garden located in the concert arena. A valid Saint Mary's College ID and a valid driver's license are required. The freshman class will also be hosting a dunk tank at Gaelstock," said Student Involvement & Leadership coordinator Dan Rott.

Rebelution is a rising reggae band based in Santa Barbara, California. "Recently, Saint Mary's College students have made a petition on www.facebook.com to have Rebelution open for Phantom Planet, and their wish has been fulfilled," said Kaitlin Gligo '09.

This year they have been traveling up and down the coast of California from San Diego all the way up to Lafayette. They sound very similar to most California reggae bands such as Sublime and Slightly Stoopid. To listen to some of their tracks, simply go to www.myspace. com/rebelutionmusic.

Phantom Planet will take center stage after Rebelution completes their set. Coming from Los Angeles, California, Phantom Planet has gained their prestige by hit songs such as "California" and "Big Brat." The hit song "California" has been the theme song for Fox's show "The O.C.," and is now widely recognized. Since many of Phantom Planet's other songs have slipped under the radar, most people regard Phantom Planet as "pop-rock."

"We are at the mercy of where a band is located, when they can play, and how much they charge," said Leonard. "As spring season usually attracts many colleges to hold concerts, it is very competitive to find any well-recognized band. Luckily, this year Phantom Planet was willing to come to Gaelstock." For more information on Phantom Planet visit their band website at www.phantom planet.com.

Gaelstock this year will be celebrated on the Athletic Practice Field behind McKeon Pavilion. The price will be $15 for students with a valid Saint Mary's College ID. Students who intend to bring a guest must pre-register on SMC.net by April 20, and the cost for a non-student guest is $20. Tickets will be on sale April 30, and may also be purchased on the day of the show. Gaelstock will open May 5, from noon to 2:30 p.m.
