The Los Angeles Dodgers swept the San Francisco Giants in a three game series April 6 through the 8 at AT&T Park in San Francisco. This shouldn't come as a surprise to those who know a thing or two about baseball.
The largest regular-season crowd ever at AT&T Park witnessed the Giants crumble 2-1 to the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday night, April 6. Behind a strong pitching performance by Brad Penny and an outstanding defensive game by second-year catcher Russell Martin, the Dodgers made the plays a team needed to make to win a one-run game, including Martin throwing out runners trying to steal bases in each of the first two innings.
Phenomenal defense was the Dodgers story once again on Saturday afternoon, as they took the meeting 4-1 behind three hits and several acrobatic defensive plays by SS Wilson Valdez in the Fox Baseball Game of The Week. Valdez, who has played for seven teams in eight seasons, accumulating only 182 at bats over those years, will likely be sent back to the minors when SS Rafael Furcal returns from injury. But Valdez will always have his Saturday by the bay.
The Dodgers completed the sweep of the Giants by taking Sunday's contest 10-4. Luis Gonzalez, Matt Kemp and Wilson Valdez had three hits apiece, as Dodgers left-handed starter Randy Wolf earned his first victory of the season by outpitching Giants $126 million "ace" Barry Zito. Zito gave up nine hits, eight runs and one home run in the loss.
The win Sunday was the Dodgers' eighth straight at AT&T park dating back to last year, which is their longest streak in San Francisco since winning 13 straight in 1976-77.
The 3-game sweep was a continuation of their head-head success against the Giants from last year, in which the Dodgers won the series 13-6. The Giants were held to six runs in the three-game set.
Zito's 0-2 record and 8.18 ERA in his first two starts as a Giant only prove that he was the single worst signing of the entire winter. He also has pitched only 11 innings, and has one more strikeout than walks (six and five).
