The Integral Program celebrated its 50th year with the Waltz last Friday and other annual traditions, involving both alumni and students. With the help of the Integral Social Committee and many other faculty members and students, Brother Donald Mansir and Professor Denis Kelly helped organize a weekend full of events open to all students.
Last weekend the Integral Program hosted two of spring's main events, which included the Waltz and the Brother Robert Lecture. The Integral Waltz, "Midnight Masquerade," has been a tradition on Saint Mary's Campus since the first year of the Integral program. Silver Moon Big Band, who performed at last year's Waltz and at the Inaugural Ball, performed live music for the event.
Integral Social Committee Chair Staci Osborn '07 looked forward to this event, "because it is a time my friends and I can get dressed up a bit, go out to dinner, and then come back here to hang out, talk, and dance a bit at the Waltz. This year was a masquerade, so there were great outfits and masks to enjoy."
On Saturday, the Integral Program opened up a seminar class to anyone who wanted to participate. Later in the evening, students were welcome to join a lecture given by Integral alumni, Robert Haas '63. Haas was a professor of English at Saint Mary's College, a professor at UC Berkeley, and is a Poet Laureate of the United States. Every year, the seminars and lectures are given on a common text by various speakers. This year, the text was Emmanuel Kant's Perpetual Peace and the lecture is entitled, "Study War No More: Kant, Violence, and the Literary Imagination."
