The Gaels were able to squeeze out a win in the opener by a final of 5-4. A late inning comeback was needed as Saint Mary's was down 3-0 through four innings.
However, the Gaels were able to rattle off five runs in the fifth, mostly on the bat of senior Lauren Mello.
Mello had a two-run single in the fifth that scored both Molly Bergeson '08 and Kayla Aldridge '09. Mello set the tone offensively with two hits and two RBIs, while junior Browyn Russell also added two hits and an RBI. Sadie Dolcini '09 and Megan Galloway '08 each drove in a run of their own.
Galloway's heroics on the mound overshadowed her feats at the plate. She earned her sixth win of the season, allowing three earned runs and 10 hits. She survived a seventh inning run to earn the complete game victory.
The Gaels' bid for their second comeback of the day fell short as the Toreros were able to secure the win 4-2.
After consecutive runs in the final two innings cut San Diego's lead in half, Christina Haake closed out the complete game. Galloway drove in Russell in the sixth on a sac fly, while Lauren Clark '09 plated Sandra Ruezga '08 with back-to-back doubles in the seventh.
The Gaels took the third game of the series, shutting out San Diego 5-0. All five of the Gaels' runs came in the fourth inning.
With no one out for the Gaels and the bases loaded, thanks to two walks and a Torero error, Bergerson hit a RBI single, keeping the bases loaded.
Russell hit a bases clearing single to knock in three.
Senior Kate Albaugh made the five runs stand, giving up no runs in her complete game performance.
Baseball: Still in search of their first West Coast Conference win, the Saint Mary's baseball team traveled to Spokane, Washington for a three game series this past weekend.
Things looked promising as the Gaels jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the opener on Friday night, as senior Eric Cattoni drew a leadoff walk, stole second, and scored on two consecutive groundouts by Ryan Mulligan '10 and Randy Wells '10.
Gonzaga took the lead for good in the third when they exploded for six runs, sending nine batters to the plate. The big blow came on a three-run homer by Aaron McGuiness.
