"I have been writing about consciousness, and what it is," said Mary Burger, a published poet who was one of the two guest speakers at Wednesday's Creative Writing Series in Hagerty Lounge. The Creative Writing Series was organized to celebrate the publication of issue 'f' in 26, a collection of poetry that is being published in collaboration with Mary Burger, Laura Moriarty, and Bettina Rotenburg.

"Issue 'f' in 26 is a newer style of poetry. It is structured like an essay; however it evokes emotion, argues, explains, discoordinates and contains the brilliance of poetry. It's really a new, innovative, approach to writing," said Burger.

Throughout the Creative Writing Series, many of the poems orbited around themes such as the disposition of perspectives, dull happiness, and locating yourself. Burger read some poems out of issue 'f' such as, "I Like Purple" and "Story Machine."

Burger said, "I wrote these poems when I was seven years old. For Issue 'f,' I have rewritten some of them, or just added as I did in 'Firecat.'"

Burger's poetry was made exuberant and abstract by combining the poetry she wrote when she was younger with the style of writing that she learned from attending the University of California at Berkeley.

As Moriarty began reading her contributions in Issue 'f,' a dull happiness began to blanket the emotions of the audience.

Moriarty's abstract poetry focused on the theme of making the invisible visible. Also, she shared a memoir of her childhood spent on an Air Force base. "I don't work for the world, I work for the Air Force base," she said.

"There have been a lot of events this year. I've been looking forward to reading here at Saint Mary's College for awhile because usually I give the introductions. So thank you for arranging this, and for having me as well," said Moriarty.

The Creative Writing Series will conclude on Wednesday, May 9 at 7:30 p.m. in the Soda Center. Brenda Hillman and Rusty Morrison are scheduled to read.

Hillman currently holds the Olivia Filippi Chair in Poetry at Saint Mary's and her books include Death Tractates, Bright Existence, and most recently Pieces of Air in the Epic.

Morrison '99 is a graduate of Saint Mary's and has received the Colorado Prize for poetry. Her poems have appeared in Chicago Review, Boston Review, and New American Writing.
