Freshman Abbie Coleman led the Gaels with two goals and one assist in the loss against the California Golden Bears.
Freshmen Amber Lister and Alana Burrough, as well as junior Jen Utley added two goals apiece, but it was not enough as Cal senior Laura Cavallo racked up six points, including five goals and one assist on "Senior Day" at Cal in the 18-9 rout.
The loss dropped the Gaels to 3-11, and 0-4 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) play. Cal improved to 6-7 overall with a 2-2 record in MPSF play.
On a beautiful Saturday afternoon at Saint Mary's Stadium, the Gaels' lone senior Jackie Spencer was honored in a pre-game ceremony before the game against UC Davis.
The Gaels got on the board first at the 20:48 mark with a goal by Burrough.
The Gaels' defense held the Aggies scoreless until the 17:26 mark when UC Davis junior Katie McGovern tied the game 1-1 with her first of two goals of the game.
Coleman responded at the 16:40 mark with a goal to put the Gaels up 2-1.
The Aggies proceeded to score four straight goals to take a 5-2 lead at the 8:17 mark in the first half. The Gaels responded with two straight goals by sophomore Lauren Frei at the 7:32 mark and red shirt junior Maddie Marsh with 1:41 left in the half to cut the lead down to 5-4.
However, the Aggies finished the half strong with a goal with 27 seconds left by senior Alden Monger and another goal with 8 seconds left by freshman Molly Lapolla to put them up 7-4 at the half.
The Gaels were held to only two second half goals.
Senior Megan O'Connor opened up the scoring in the half for the Aggies with a goal at the 29:10 mark to put UC Davis up 8-4.
The Gaels responded soon after with a goal by Lister with 28:37 left to cut the lead to 8-5, but the Aggies scored five straight goals to go up 13-5 by the time the 22:35 mark was hit.
Gael junior Alex Oetken scored the Gaels' final goal of the game, but the Aggies tacked on two more goals to win the match 15-6.
The Gaels never let up with their physical play, making sure the Aggies felt their presence often with check after check.
The Gaels return to action on Thursday, May 2nd in the MPSF playoffs as the #6 seed against the #3 Stanford Cardinal at UC Davis.
