Hello there friendly reader, my name is Linda Hua and welcome to the first issue of the 105th volume of The Collegian. This is my second year as the editor-in-chief of The Collegian, I am a senior experimental psychology major and I love grammar and editing, thus, I love my job.

The Collegian may have been around for over 104 years, but for those who are new to the Saint Mary's community, or are unfamiliar to how we run things, let's take a tour of the newspaper.

The Collegian was founded in 1903, making us one of the oldest undergraduate newspapers in the west. We are a member of the Associated Collegiate Press and follow their ethical guidelines as we have also begun to compete in their annual "…of the Year" contests. We thus strive for excellence and our purpose is to serve campus-oriented news to the Saint Mary's community while providing entertainment as well.

In the news section, we cover news-worthy on-campus events and topics concerning Saint Mary's in a timely manner. There, we are open to press releases and story ideas sent in from the community; yet do not be disappointed if your submitted idea does not pass our storyboard selection.

Within the news sections, we also have news features, which focus on specific, timeless, and sometimes abstract topics in depth.

Our opinion section serves as a forum for the student voice, where opinions of students are expressed. Here we invite members of the community to give their input also-in the form of letters to the editor. In past years, we have had readers blur the lines between our writers' opinions and The Collegian's opinion. "Collegian View" aside, the newspaper as a whole is impartial; the opinions expressed are those of their respective writers and do not reflect the opinions of the remainder of the staff nor that of The Collegian's advertisers.

The detour section, is as the name implies, a detour from the rest of the paper. There, you will find topics in arts and entertainment that may or may not have anything to do with Saint Mary's College. Often times, movie, music, and video game reviews fill those two pages. Every once in a while, you will also find reader activities such as crosswords, puzzles, and sudoku.

For those who are interested in joining our staff, we are always welcoming new writers, copy editors, layout designers, and photographers, so we invite anyone interested in great journalistic experience, to join us at our next meeting (Tuesday, September 4 at 6 p.m. in Dante 115).
