Feeling lost or overwhelmed with the idea of graduating and planning your future?

Robert Unzueta '08 and Elizabeth Cruz '09 can relate to this feeling that plagues most college students. This feeling is what inspired the two to join forces and create Saint Mary's newest club Students Reaching Consciousness (SRC).

"It was a combination of seeing students struggle to navigate their way through the college process and also seeing them unable to find their niche," said Cruz.

Both Unzueta and Cruz are first generation college students who understand the difficulty in knowing where to go on campus when faced with questions regarding their furture.

The mission of SRC is to help students reach their full potential. The mentors leading the club will help students by pointing them in the right direction regarding career goals and financial aid decisions, encouraging them to become more involved on campus, and helping them to decide what steps to take to ensure academic success. The goal of the club is to create a sense of community among Saint Mary's students who will work together to help each other.

"This is the perfect place to institute something like this. The size of the campus and its core principles, such as an inclusive community, make Saint Mary's a good starting point for a club like the SRC," said Unzueta.

The SRC is looking for students who are interested in helping their peers and think they would be a good mentor. The club invites all who wish to become more "college culture savvy" to join.

"It is a 'get through college' club," said Cruz. "There is a culture here to be learned and we are here to help students do just that."

For the club's first semester in action, the officers plan to focus on the continual retention issue at Saint Mary's. Approximately 55 students from the freshman class transferred out of Saint Mary's last year.

"Fifty-five is just too many. We want students to come to Saint Mary's, stay, and graduate," said Cruz.

The SRC looks forward to a challenging, but successful year. The members hope to provide guidance and act as a referral service for students. The SRC will utilize the help of other clubs as well as 15 faculty members.

"We are hoping to bridge the gap between the students and the school and the best way to do this is with the help of your peers," said Unzueta.
