William Woods '11 is one candidate for freshmen president. Currently declaring political science as his major, Woods plans to "join the Naval Academy after college and work as a lawyer with the Navy." Although Woods has no previous experience with student involvement, he wants to "get freshmen included in their class and school." He wants to encourage greater involvement, and said, "Student involvement in clubs is a unique and enriching attribute to Saint Mary's College that I would work to expand and promote, urging everyone to take advantage of their opportunities here."
Student involvement is also a central theme in presidential candidate John Skaff's '11 campaign. "I am running for president because I know that I'll be able to get more students involved with all this college has to offer. We invest so much in this college, so let's make the most of it," said Skaff. He aspires to, "get our class down to San Francisco… and see the great underground concerts and music in the city." Since coming to Saint Mary's, Skaff has joined Project Green and Asian Pacific American Student Association (APASA). He also has some experience with his high school student government. "I really want to get more people involved; lots of people like me are apathetic, and I want to get them out," he said.
Connie Tai '11 is another contender for the position of freshmen president. She is pursuing a double major of business and accounting. She feels that this type of position runs in her blood, having been involved in student government since seventh grade. Her past experience includes being president during middle school and sophomore treasurer and senior class representative in high school. During high school, she was also captain of the varsity track team for three years and editor-in-chief of the yearbook.
Tai hopes that this role will help her make the most of her college years. "I just hope, I guess, to get a good education out of it," she said. She also wants to benefit the college community. "I really like giving back to the school," she said.
Finally, Tosveena Thomas '11 is seeking the presidential position for the freshmen class. This business major is involved with APASA. She has not had student government experience in the past, but feels that freshmen year is a good time to try new things. "This is a new experience for me and…this is a new experience for all the freshmen too," she said.
Along with the presidential elections will be elections for freshmen vice president and senators. The vice presidential candidates are Drew Williams '11 and Daniella Baltodano '11. Candidates for freshmen senator are Thomas, Williams, Tantica Thompson '11, Carlos Mongalo '11, and Raymyah (Ray) Dixon '11.
A junior presidential election is also taking place, as the position was left empty after last year's elections. Sergio Trejo '09 is the only candidate for the position. Trejo is currently a psychology major and has been a Lasallian and Santiago Community member. In addition, he served as class president during his junior and senior years of high school. He wants to use the position to its full potential. "I feel that the resources given to previous presidents were not used to their full potential in making strides towards bettering our school and campus community. I feel it is my responsibility, as it is the responsibility of all students, to make positive change and help in molding campus services for the students-present and future," said Trejo.
Students can vote online at SMCNet for positions in their class.
